The City Voted as one of the five "most livable" regions in America according to Time magazine, the city of Sacramento is the capital of California and is one of the most populous cities in the state. Downtown "SacTown" has several features including the California State Capitol building, the home of California's politics. Getting around the city is a breeze with Sacramento's Regional Transit which provides a light rail service and bus services through the heart of downtown. The city also boasts the historic Sacramento Valley Amtrak Station which is located just north of Downtown Plaza. Entertainment & The Arts The downtown area has been undergoing a major revitalization and now hosts a major shopping center called Downtown Plaza, which features an outdoor shopping mall that visitors can enjoy. Visitors of the city can also enjoy Sacramento's active nightlife featuring nightclubs, theatres, restaurants, and dancehalls in the downtown area. Sacramento's music scene is constantly abuzz as each year the city hosts the "Sammies" otherwise known as the Sacramento Music Awards where many local bands perform. In addition to the Sammies, the city also hosts the Sacramento Jazz Jubilee every Memorial Day weekend where thousands of jazz fans gather to enjoy Dixieland jazz. If history is your pleasure Sacramento has several major museums in the area. The Crocker Art Museum is the oldest public art museum west of the Mississippi River and has a wide collection of artwork from early California settlement art to paintings done by Rembrandt and Durer. Another point of interest is The California Museum of History and the Women and the Arts museum which proudly display the authentic history of the golden state of California. Sports The city of Sacramento hosts several sports teams including minor league baseball, professional basketball, women's basketball, and professional soccer. The Sacramento Kings are the most prominent sports team in SacTown claming two Western Division titles since 2002. The team moved to Sacramento in 1985 and has several former players in the NBA Hall of Fame including Nate "Tiny" Archibald and Oscar Robertson. Colleges & Universities Sacramento State, otherwise known as CSU Sacramento, is the cities featured four-year institution with a total student population of 29,000. The college recently built the Alumni Center which features a continuing education building, a building for the universities radio station, an Information Resource Center, and an extra parking garage. |
